Answer the following questions:
1. Which comes first in the order of operations?
a. Multiplication b. Grouping Symbols
c. subractiond. exponents
2. Which grouping symbol should be used first?
a. Braces b. Parentheses
c. Brackets d. exponents
3. If an expression has braces and brackets, which should be used first?
a. Braces b. Brackets
4. In the expression
6 + 8 x 3 ÷ 3 - 4, which operation should you do first?
a. Add b. Subtract
c. Multiply d. Divide
Evaluate the following expressions using the order of operations:
5. 8 + (3-2) - [4 + (5 - 3) -1] Parentheses first, 3 - 2 is 1, 5 - 3 is 2. 8 + 1 - [4 + 2 - 1] brackets first, so 4 + 2 is 6 - 1 is 5. That leaves 8 + 1 - 5 Left to right 8 + 1 is 9 - 5 = 4
6. 7 x 4 + (13 - 5)Parentheses first 13 - 5 is 8. 7 x 4 + 8. Multiplication first, so 7 x 4 is 28. 28 + 8 = 36
7. (10 - 3) + 9 x 2Parentheses first, 10 - 3 is 7. 7 + 9 x 2. Multiplication first, so 9 x 2 is 18. That leaves 7 + 18 = 25
8. 23 x 2 - 16 ÷ 4Left to right multiplication comes first so 23 x 2 is 46. 46 - 16 ÷ 4. Division comes before subtraction, so 16 ÷ 4 = 4. Only subtraction left: 46 - 4 = 42
9. 36 ÷ 6 x 3 + (7 - 2) Parentheses first 7 -2 is 5. So 36 ÷ 6 x 3 +5. Division is before multiplication left to right, so 36 ÷ 6 = 6. That leaves 6 x 3 + 5. Multiply before add, so 6 x 3 is 18. Finally, 18+ 5 = 23.
10. 4 + (12 - 5) x 5Parentheses first, 12-5 is 7. So 4 + 7 x 5. Multiply before add, so 7 x 5 is 35. 4 + 35. Only addition left,so 4 + 35 =39.
